FROMM Family Nutritionals In 1948 Fromm’s chief nutritionist, Dr. Willard Roberts, pioneered the process of producing a complete food in the dry kibble form that is widely used today. Since then Tom Nieman, president of this small, specialist, family-run business, has continued to improve upon each recipe while maintaining certain traditions. For example, the Classic Nutritionals line is still based upon the ‘four grain principle’ and uses 17 different essential ingredients - nowadays there is no wheat in the Classics line and many of the products now include pre and probiotics, glucosamine and chondroitin. The four grains have helped produce a balanced blend of foods resulting in easier digestion and fewer allergic reactions, also increased energy for dogs and cats. This holds true even today when the food is at this moment being manufactured in the UK under licence at Golden Acres. Tom has set up and overseen a few test production runs and the first full run took place in January. This move was necessary due to the increasing number of restrictions imposed by the EU on pet foods imported from the USA. Having made the decision to go down the route of manufacturing all food for the European market in the UK in order to safeguard supplies, Tom set out with one aim in mind: not just to produce food here in the UK, but to improve upon the quality. This proved quite a lengthy business, organising the quality of ingredients that Tom requires i.e. raw fresh meat, not processed. He also decided to remove wheat from all the products, not just the Gold line. He also increased the amount of cheese contained in the Gold line to make it even more palatable. His next project is to expand with a new line: the ’Ultra Gold’. Having the Fromm food manufactured in the UK has enabled us to have the weight altered on the VAT Free Minichunks, the Adult Cat food and the Kitten food. They are now available in 15kg plain bags to keep the cost down. This enables us to send out 2x15kg bags if the customer wishes, therefore receiving the consignment carriage -free. The great success story in the last few years at Fromm has been the introduction of the Gold line. Each of the three Gold dog foods - Puppy, Adult and Senior - are made exclusively from fresh chicken and duck muscle meat with added pre and probiotics to aid gut health and digestion. The products contain glucosamine and chondroitin to support the dog and therefore enables the dog to exercise more freely , thereby helping to heal themselves more efficiently. These preparations have been taken by humans for many years now: they seem to act more quickly on dogs, probably because they enjoy daily exercise more! There is no wheat or corn in the Gold line to further help the small percentage of dogs with allergic reactions to many ingredients. The important element of the Gold line is that it contains a small amount of cheese: this flavour really comes through (you can try it yourself and really taste the cheese, it’s made from human grade ingredients - Roger is always demonstrating this at trade shows!), so if you have a dog that is a really fussy eater and you would like to get it settled on a dry, complete food (better for the dog‘s teeth and gums than tinned food and mixer, more hygienic in hot weather and far more economical), we would be quite surprised if your dog doesn’t take to it (make sure it is hungry first!) Last year Fromm went through the lengthy process of gaining BUAV (British Union Against Vivisection) recognition. This is highlighted by labels on each bag of food. Fromm have never tested on caged animals; they conduct feeding trials for performance and palatability on individual pets, and liaise with breeders and kennels in the USA.
