Postal Pet Products was founded in 1998 by Penni and Roger to take over the importation of Fromm Family Nutritionals into the UK. Seeing as Penni’s background was 29 years in Education and Roger’s was, well, ‘various and varied’ might best describe it, neither of them had been involved in this type of business before. Naturally it was a very steep learning curve, with flexibility being the operative word. They did have one distinct advantage: Roger had been a distributor for Fromm in the UK for 5 years when he ran a boarding kennels and cattery, so he knew that the pet food performed far better than anything else available at the time. When the business started, Roger had 20 dogs (he had run a Border Collie Rescue Unit within the kennels) and Penni had 2. Now Roger has 9 dogs and Penni has 4. The dogs range from Westies, Spaniels, Border Collies, Rotties and a GSD. Most of these are rescues or rehomed dogs. Apart from the Westies who are really getting on a bit, they all go out for walks together and spend a lot of time with them going from the office to the warehouse and generally out and about. In 2002 they were asked to take on the importation of Eagle Pack dog and cat food. Seeing as it was of the same high quality as Fromm, they were happy to do so. Between the two American family based firms there is a great deal of flexibility for our customers. In 2002 Penni and Roger were lucky to have Rob join them for 3 days a week. That’s not all he does though: he can run the business for us while they have trade stands at Crufts etc. and can cover at very short notice. As long as he can have his numerous trips and holidays in France, can jet off somewhere in Europe and disappear for sea fishing trips, he’s quite happy. Rob retired from Social Security in 2001(after 42 years of dedicated service, man and boy!) He doesn’t have a dog at present, but he has taken to Vesty and takes him to the warehouse when he does up the next-day deliveries (when he isn’t playing with the dog!) The warehouse is 4 miles from the office which is part of Roger’s home. The house is situated in a valley adjacent to the one that housed and inspired Elizabeth Barrett Browning - an area of outstanding natural beauty and a rural farming community. From the photograph you will understand why they don’t have the office at the warehouse.
